The reason I chose these two topics to compare and contrast is because I do them both. I have been writing Poetry for about four years now. I have been rapping for about two. Poetry and rap have both gotten me out of some pretty dark times in my life but I know that they are different and similar in very many different ways. Some people think they are nothing alike at all but they are very wrong. I want people to understand how much these two activities have in common and what they are all about in essence.

Blog Post #3

First Article: In the article "I Want A Wife," Judy Brady goes into depth about the positive attributes of a wife figure. Her entire summation of a wife however, is based on repetitive stereotypes of what a man looks for in a spouse. Judy, being a female, makes the point that based on these stereotypes she wants a wife for herself. Somebody who would take care of her children while she goes to school. Somebody who is sensitive to her needs and the needs of the people close to her, including her children. A wife who cares about and conforms to all of her sexual needs. This entire perspective though was just a way to get the point across that in modern day society, men look for certain attributes in woman that may not be considered realistic.

Second Article: In the second article, "Men----It's Their Nature," by Christina Hoff Sommers, a different approach to explaining men is taken. Christina goes into scientific detail to try and explain behavior of men, including that of her own son. She explains that many people around the world are taking measures to try and sensitize men. They allowed only specific activities such as "quilting, games without scores, and stories about brave girls and boys who learn to cry." After decades of research however, neurologists, endocrinologists, geneticists, and psychologists, have made leaps and bounds in discovering the truth about male behavior. They believe that it is hardwired into our brains. That although we are impacted by our environment and how we are raised, the activities we choose to participate in can be essentially predicted. Masculine behavior is aggressive and at times dangerous. But it has proven very effective in the fields of battle, construction, engineering, and other male majority populated specialties. The bottom line being, "maleness is back in fashion."

My Choice: The article I choose to focus on in my essay is "Men----It's Their Nature" by Christina Hoff Sommers. I chose this article primarily because of its scientific point of view. I like to think of things objectively and not make as many assumptions and stereotypes. The first article seems to be targeting men in a cynical way which is off-putting to me, a male. Also, psychology is a very interesting subject to me. I would rather analyze an article taking a stance predicated on science than one trying to categorize the entire male species in a negative light.

My Distraction:

Strong, surrounding, busy. That is my oasis. This place is what many may call the heart. It always beats with life and when I'm there, I'm glad to indulge. Whistles, honks, chimes, and chatter, they all add to the ambiance. The lighting reminds me of modern fireflies. I find beauty in creation and that inspires me to create for myself. In this world, my mind is distracted, thoughts carried away. Sometimes you become overwhelmed however, find myself yearning to go back every time I'm away.

"Destroyed"

1. This article is written from the view of somebody who had been assigned to write a paper discussing brain enhancing chemicals or drugs. While pondering the implications of taking these substances they made the connection to sports. They suggest that brain enhancing drugs are no different from physical enhancing drugs such as steroids. If this is true, then people using brain enhancing drugs are cheating. However the point is raised of what is cheating? And how do we decide? Well in sports, the rules have already been decided. Performance enhancing drugs of any kind are not allowed in sports. The fans themselves are impacted by the choices of the athletes using because they are left with an uncertainty of what stats are real and who really is the best player. But, what do the athletes deal with? Not only the constant scrutiny of the paparazzi but also the physical consequences. They will have to live with the reduced life span and possibility of heart attacks. The fans may be upset by the turn that sports have taken but, who is really being punished?

2. The sports watched by millions around their world are ancient but only recently have been taking a turn for the worst. Our sports seem to be under attack by performance enhancing drugs and the athletes using them. However, what is happening to the athletes in return?

3. I disagree with one particular part of this piece. When the author starts talking about the physical backlash of taking performance enhancing drugs (Peter Martin 582). The medical facts are there although they don't completely match up with mind enhancers. Some certain herbs are completely natural and have been proven to show no physical wear on the user while simultaneously enhancing cognitive function and memory.
