1. This article is written from the view of somebody who had been assigned to write a paper discussing brain enhancing chemicals or drugs. While pondering the implications of taking these substances they made the connection to sports. They suggest that brain enhancing drugs are no different from physical enhancing drugs such as steroids. If this is true, then people using brain enhancing drugs are cheating. However the point is raised of what is cheating? And how do we decide? Well in sports, the rules have already been decided. Performance enhancing drugs of any kind are not allowed in sports. The fans themselves are impacted by the choices of the athletes using because they are left with an uncertainty of what stats are real and who really is the best player. But, what do the athletes deal with? Not only the constant scrutiny of the paparazzi but also the physical consequences. They will have to live with the reduced life span and possibility of heart attacks. The fans may be upset by the turn that sports have taken but, who is really being punished?
2. The sports watched by millions around their world are ancient but only recently have been taking a turn for the worst. Our sports seem to be under attack by performance enhancing drugs and the athletes using them. However, what is happening to the athletes in return?
3. I disagree with one particular part of this piece. When the author starts talking about the physical backlash of taking performance enhancing drugs (Peter Martin 582). The medical facts are there although they don't completely match up with mind enhancers. Some certain herbs are completely natural and have been proven to show no physical wear on the user while simultaneously enhancing cognitive function and memory.
I enjoyed reading your blog post. Your summary was very thorough. I also was very interested to read your third point. Martin is focusing on the negative physical ailments that are associated with the performance enhancing drugs but doesn't seem to mention the possibility that the mind enhancing drugs may actually be beneficial. Very interesting points. I look forward to reading more of your posts.
ReplyDeleteI viewed the "mind enhancer" statement as a minor point, while the major point was to rationalize cheating. Martin referenced using mind enhancers to cheat on his assignment with steroid use and cheating in an athletic arena. Granted I did not feel that way until after a dozen times reading the article!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I noticed in a previous post, during a summary there should not be like words or opinions included in reference to piece,
I am anxious to read your views, as they seem to differ slightly in perspective, thank you for allowing me to enjoy your work.
Keep in mind with a summary we want to only convey the main ideas of the author and not add in rhetorical questions. While, although your summary is thorough and concise, it should be reflective of the main ideas only.
ReplyDeleteParaphrasing, however, is a bit trickier. We want to ensure that we mirror the main point the author is trying to get across in our own words, without using personal opinion, but also that we give the author credit. This means making sure we include a citation that reflects that the idea is our author's and not our own. Review this link: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/563/1/.
I did enjoy your area of disagreement. If you use a direct quote, with MLA, usually it is just the author's last name and page number (Martin 582). That will help you in future posts and assignments!
